**Ruiz Backs Ravens for Super Bowl: Fixing Penalties and Coverage Could Pave the Way**
Baltimore Ravens are still viewed as a top contender for the Super Bowl despite their mid-season struggles, according to Steven Ruiz of The Ringer. Ruiz argues that the Ravens, who find themselves behind five other teams in the current AFC playoff standings, still showcase the best potential in the conference.
“I can't quit this team," Ruiz expressed. "It's too talented, and its flaws—penalties on the offensive line and struggles with deep ball coverage—can be easily rectified.” He highlights that even with these issues, which have cost the Ravens four games so far, the team's overall statistical profile points to them being the strongest in the conference.
Ruiz supports his claims with some impressive stats: the Ravens are second in the NFL in DVOA, trailing only the Detroit Lions. They top the charts in offensive DVOA and EPA, boast the league's best run defense, and are third in sacks. Ruiz believes that if Baltimore addresses their penalty and coverage problems by January, they should be considered favorites to win the Lombardi Trophy.
Ruiz is optimistic about the Ravens improving in these areas, pointing out the inherent volatility in statistical performance. "Defensive performance against deep passes often fluctuates, and Baltimore ranking 31st in EPA on deep targets is likely to improve as the season progresses," he noted. Similarly, team penalties in the first half of the season tend not to be strong indicators for the second half, suggesting potential for improvement.
Further bolstering his argument, Ruiz mentions that the Ravens' highs have surpassed those of any other team in the conference. “They’ve dominated teams like Buffalo and won against the Bengals, and nearly beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead," Ruiz wrote. "Their potential is immense if they avoid self-sabotage.”
In addition, Lamar Jackson has dispelled myths about his passing efficiency. ESPN’s Aaron Schatz highlights that Jackson has been exceptional from the pocket, leading the NFL in pocket passing DVOA and EPA this season. Jackson's stats speak volumes: he has completed 72% of his passes from the pocket, averaging a league-leading 9.5 yards per attempt.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Ravens to see if they can refine their play and capitalize on their immense talent to make a serious run in the playoffs.
