In a major coup for Coach Sherrone Moore and his inaugural recruiting class, the Michigan Wolverines have scored their highest-ranked commitment with four-star safety Kainoa Winston. Ranked at No. 42 in the 2025 ESPN 300, Winston announced his pledge to Michigan, choosing them over Penn State, Oregon, and North Carolina.

Hailing from powerhouse Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., the 5-foot-11, 190-pound defensive back is highly regarded as the No. 3 safety in his class. Winston recently made an official visit to Ann Arbor, which further solidified his decision to join the Wolverines.

What makes this commitment particularly significant is that it marks a victory over conference rival Penn State. Winston's cousin, safety Kevin Winston Jr., was a regular starter in the Nittany Lions' secondary last season. According to ESPN's rankings, Kainoa Winston now represents Michigan's highest-ranked pledge since defensive end Derrick Moore in the 2022 class, who was ranked at No. 19.

Winston's commitment comes as the second major addition for Michigan this week, following defensive tackle Jaylen Williams' commitment. The momentum of Moore's first recruiting efforts for the Wolverines is clearly building, as now they have four ESPN 300 prospects already committed for the 2025 class.

Joining Winston are defensive tackle Nathaniel Marshall, ranked at No. 78 in the ESPN 300, and quarterback Carter Smith, the No. 14 pocket passer in this cycle. Offensive tackle Avery Gach, who stands at No. 296, completes the group of top 300 recruits who will be joining the Wolverines in 2025.

Looking ahead, Michigan is expecting visits from several high-profile recruits, including safety Jordan Young (No. 33), offensive tackle Andrew Babalola (No. 44), outside linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng (No. 73), and running back Jordon Davison (No. 88). Additionally, the Wolverines are still in contention for Bishop Gorman offensive linemen S.J. Alofaituli and Douglas Utu, who are ranked at No. 10 and 11 respectively in the ESPN 300.
