In an unfortunate turn of events, the New York Mets have announced that starting catcher Francisco Alvarez has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained left thumb. Alvarez sustained the injury while running the bases during Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and subsequent testing is being conducted to determine the severity of the injury and the appropriate course of treatment.
Manager Carlos Mendoza expressed uncertainty about the extent of Alvarez's injury, stating, "We know it's going to be more than 10 days." The team is awaiting further information to develop a timeline and plan for his recovery, but it is clear that Alvarez will be out for an extended period.
To fill the void left by Alvarez's absence, the Mets have called up Tomás Nido from Triple-A Syracuse. Nido, who had an impressive start in Syracuse with a .345 batting average and one home run in nine games, is expected to share catching duties with Omar Narváez.
Alvarez's injury occurred when he stumbled on the basepaths during the game, causing him to put his left hand on the ground to break his fall and bending his thumb back in the process. The young catcher, known for his offensive prowess and exceptional framing abilities, left the game immediately after the incident.
Teammate Francisco Lindor expressed concern for Alvarez, remarking, "I knew he was in extreme pain as soon as he came out of the game. I'll be praying for him, and I know everyone in this clubhouse will be doing the same thing."
With Alvarez sidelined for the foreseeable future, Narváez will assume the role of the primary catcher. Although the Mets had invested in catching depth by signing Narváez and guaranteeing Nido's arbitration years, neither possess the offensive upside exhibited by Alvarez.
Alvarez's absence will undoubtedly be felt by the team, but Narváez remains optimistic, stating, "We all know that [Alvarez] is a tough kid, and it takes a lot to take him out of the game. But things happen. You've just got to play the game. I'm ready to go, and I'll try to keep the team at the same level [until] he comes back."
This injury is the first significant setback Alvarez has faced this season, despite experiencing some minor issues in the past. Mendoza clarified that a recent incident involving a catcher's interference call was unrelated to the thumb injury he sustained on Friday.
While the Mets await a final diagnosis for Alvarez, the team is focused on maintaining their performance level without their starting catcher. As Mendoza stated, "We're pretty comfortable. Like we always say, next guy up. It's an opportunity here for Nido and Narváez to step up."
The Mets will undoubtedly miss Alvarez's contributions on both offense and behind the plate, but they remain determined to overcome this setback as they continue their season.
