The New Mexico Department of Health has reported that two children from Taos County have tested positive for measles. Both children, who are under 10 years old, reside in the same household and contracted the disease after returning from international travel. These confirmed cases have raised concerns about the potential spread of measles within the community.
The only known instance of public exposure occurred at the Aspen Medical Center Urgent Care located at 411 Santa Clara Bridge Rd in Espanola. The exposure dates were on Sunday, May 26, from 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Tuesday, May 28, from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. NMHealth Secretary Patrick Allen has assured the public that the department has already reached out to individuals who may have been exposed.
"The Department of Health has identified and contacted potentially exposed people to inform them about the necessary precautions and symptoms to be aware of," stated Secretary Allen. For those who were present at the urgent care facility during the specified days and times and have not yet been contacted, the NMHealth Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773) has been made available for further assistance.
Anyone known to have been possibly exposed to measles has had their vaccine records thoroughly examined. The symptoms of measles can manifest between one week to 21 days after exposure and include fever, cough, a runny rose, red eyes, and a subsequent rash.
Statistics reveal that one in five unvaccinated individuals who contract measles require hospitalization. In an effort to combat the spread of the disease, the Department of Health has emphasized that measles vaccines are readily accessible to New Mexico families with children at no charge, regardless of insurance status.
The situation is being closely monitored, and health officials are urging residents to stay up-to-date with the latest health news and information. The KOAT app can be downloaded to receive regular updates on this evolving situation.
It is essential for the community to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to prevent further spread of measles. By monitoring symptoms, seeking medical attention if necessary, and ensuring vaccinations are up to date, individuals can play a vital role in safeguarding public health.
While no additional public exposures have been reported at this time, individuals are advised to remain informed and follow the guidelines set forth by health authorities. The Department of Health continues to work diligently to address this outbreak and protect the well-being of the community.
