A park in Alton, Illinois was forced to close its doors on Wednesday, June 26, after a colossal sinkhole unexpectedly appeared in the middle of a soccer field. Thanks to the City of Alton's CCTV surveillance video, the astonishing moment the ground opened up was captured for all to see.
The footage showcased the earth's surface splitting apart at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, leaving a massive sinkhole measuring approximately 100 feet wide in Gordon Moore Park. Additional drone footage provided by 618 Drone Service revealed the extent of the damage, with the turf on the soccer field giving way to the gaping hole.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the incident occurred when the field was unoccupied. Alton Mayor, David Goins, confirmed that no one was hurt during the collapse. In light of the troubling development, all scheduled events at the park have been canceled until investigations into the sinkhole are concluded.
Local media reports have traced the cause of the sinkhole to a mine collapse. A spokesperson from the New Frontier Materials underground mine in Alton confirmed that a surface subsidence occurrence caused the sinkhole at Gordon Moore City Park. As authorities scramble to assess the situation, the closure of the park will remain in effect until further notice.
The appearance of this massive sinkhole has left the community of Alton in awe at the sheer power of natural forces. As investigations continue, residents are urged to stay away from the affected area for their own safety.
