### Landslide Closes Northbound I-5 in Bellingham, Cleanup Underway
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A massive landslide has forced the closure of northbound Interstate 5 just north of Iowa Street in Bellingham, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The incident occurred early Sunday morning, shortly before 6 a.m., near milepost 254.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the landslide. WSDOT crews are currently on-site, working diligently to clear debris and repair damages to barriers and walls. The jersey barrier, which was pushed into the southbound lanes, requires realignment before the roadway can be safely reopened.
Geotechnical experts are also evaluating the stability of the slope at the affected location. While the southbound lanes of I-5 are still open, they have been impacted by the incident.
Significant rainfall in the area has heightened the risk of flooding on nearby local roads. WSDOT cautions drivers to avoid standing water and to heed any "Road Closed" signs for safety reasons. Traffic has been rerouted off I-5 at Lakeway and back on at Sunset until further notice.
This landslide is not related to a previous slide that occurred in 2021 on Nulle Road, WSDOT clarified. Travelers are encouraged to continue using alternate routes and to remain patient as crews work to restore safe travel conditions as quickly as possible.
