**Marco Sturm Named Head Coach of Boston Bruins**
Marco Sturm has embarked on a new chapter of his illustrious hockey career. The Boston Bruins announced on Thursday that the former winger will take on the mantle of head coach, marking a significant milestone in his post-playing career. The Bruins welcomed Sturm with an announcement video featuring him at his desk, proudly showing off his new nameplate.
"We're proud to name Marco as the 30th head coach of the Boston Bruins and welcome him, Astrid, Mason, and Kaydie to Boston," said General Manager Don Sweeney in a press release. "Throughout this process, our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively. Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion." Sweeney emphasized Sturm's wide-ranging experience in the NHL, AHL, and international coaching as key factors in their decision.
Sturm, a former Bruin, has gathered a wealth of coaching experience since retiring from professional play. He spent the last three seasons as the head coach of the AHL's Ontario Reign, the American League affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, where he also served as an assistant coach. Additionally, Sturm has been recognized for his international coaching credentials, notably leading Germany to a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.
"I'm incredibly honored to be named head coach of the Boston Bruins," Sturm expressed in a press release. He also extended his thanks to the Jacobs family, Cam Neely, and Don Sweeney for the opportunity. "Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and to our fans."
Sturm's individual connection to the Bruins is deep-rooted. He was a key part of the team for five seasons, scoring some memorable goals, including the game-winning goal in overtime during the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park. Throughout his 14-year playing career, Sturm accumulated 264 goals and 263 assists over 938 games, complemented by another 30 appearances in the playoffs.
At 46 years old, Sturm is now poised to steer the Bruins towards new heights, with hopes of returning the Original Six franchise to Stanley Cup glory. His blend of competitive spirit and coaching acumen is anticipated to resonate well with the team, as he becomes the 30th head coach in the storied history of the Boston Bruins.
