A man set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in northwest Washington, DC on a Sunday afternoon, according to officials from the District's fire department. The man was extinguished by members of the US Secret Service uniformed division and has since been transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Metropolitan Police Department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) responded due to a "suspicious vehicle that may be connected to the individual," but no hazardous materials were found. The incident marks the second known self-immolation outside an Israeli diplomatic location in recent months, following a similar event at the Israeli consulate in Atlanta, Georgia in December. In past years, two US climate activists have also died after setting themselves on fire as an act of protest. More recently, on Earth Day in 2022, climate activist Wynn Alan Bruce set himself on fire in front of the US Supreme Court, leading to his death the following day.
