**U.S. Fines Lufthansa $4 Million Over Alleged Discrimination Against Jewish Passengers**
The U.S. government has imposed a $4 million fine on Lufthansa, alleging that the airline engaged in discriminatory practices against Jewish travelers in an incident last year. The German carrier had refused to allow 128 passengers, mostly Orthodox Jews, to board a connecting flight in Frankfurt on May 3, 2022. This group of passengers was headed from New York City to Budapest for an annual memorial event honoring an Orthodox rabbi.
The Department of Transportation's investigation revealed that Lufthansa's actions were based on the alleged misbehavior of some individuals on the initial flight to Frankfurt. Despite the fact that many of these passengers did not know each other and were not traveling as a single group, the airline treated them collectively and denied them boarding privileges.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that the enforcement action serves as a stern warning to the airline industry. “No one should face discrimination when they travel, and today's action sends a clear message to the airline industry that we are prepared to investigate and take action whenever passengers' civil rights are violated,” Buttigieg said in his statement. This penalty marks the largest ever issued by the agency for civil rights violations against an airline.
In response, Lufthansa has stated its commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future. The airline has developed a specialized training program designed to educate its managers and employees on issues of antisemitism and discrimination. Moreover, Lufthansa noted that it is the first airline to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's working definition of antisemitism. The company reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward racism, antisemitism, and any form of discrimination, pledging to maintain an open dialogue with Jewish communities and organizations worldwide.
Lufthansa has apologized for the incident and described it as inconsistent with its policies and values. The carrier emphasized its dedication to fostering an inclusive and respectful travel environment for all passengers.
