In a shocking turn of events, Trayron Milton, the brother of LSU women's basketball guard Flau'jae Johnson, was arrested and charged with assault and battery as well as disorderly conduct. The incident took place during LSU's game against South Carolina in the SEC Tournament championship game on Sunday.
According to the Associated Press, Milton jumped over the scorer's table and entered the court, sparking chaos as a melee broke out involving Johnson. He was subsequently handcuffed and removed from the court by police.
The Greenville Police Department reported that Milton allegedly pushed down a female SEC employee and stepped on her shoulders in his haste to reach the court. He was promptly arrested and is currently in jail.
The brawl unfolded with just over two minutes remaining in the game when Johnson intentionally fouled South Carolina's MiLaysia Fulwiley. This led to pushing and verbal exchanges before South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso delivered a blow to Johnson, escalating the situation even further.
Following the game, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley expressed her apologies for the ugly incident. "I just want to apologize to the basketball community," said Staley. "When you're playing in championship games like this in our league, things get heated. No bad intentions. Their emotions got so far ahead of them that sometimes these things happen."
Meanwhile, LSU coach Kim Mulkey took a different approach by criticizing Cardoso for targeting Johnson instead of Angel Reese. Mulkey commented, "It's ugly, it's not good, no one wants to be a part of that. But I'll tell you this, I wish [Cardoso] would've pushed Angel Reese. If you're 6-8, don't push somebody that little. That was uncalled for in my opinion. Let those two girls who were jawing, let them go at it."
The incident has cast a dark shadow over the SEC Tournament championship game and has drawn attention to the need for players and officials to maintain control in heated situations. Both teams will likely face repercussions for the brawl as the incident is further investigated.
As both Milton and Johnson's actions come under scrutiny, the LSU women's basketball program will have to address the fallout from this unfortunate incident, hoping to move forward with a renewed focus on sportsmanship and fair play in future games.
