A Los Angeles resident identified as 33-year-old Ksenia Khavana has been arrested in Russia on suspicion of high treason. Khavana, who worked at the Ciel Spa in the SLS luxury hotel in Beverly Grove, was allegedly detained by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) after reportedly donating $51.80 to a Ukrainian charity in the United States. The arrest took place when she visited family in Russia, leading to her failing to show up for work in mid-January, stated Isabella Koretz, CEO of Ciel Spa. Khavana had been employed at the spa for 8 years and initially came to the U.S. on a Visa as a ballet dancer. The U.S. State Department has issued a "Do Not Travel" advisory for Americans traveling to Russia, emphasizing wrongful detention as a potential risk. Treason in Russia can result in a life sentence, according to Time. The arrest was captured in a video released by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, showing Khavana being led away in handcuffs by the FSB.
