In a recent court ruling, Justice Peter Lane of the High Court in London stated that Prince Harry was not wrongfully deprived of publicly funded security during his visits to the UK after relinquishing his role as a working royal and relocating to the United States. The decision to provide security to the Duke of Sussex on a case-by-case basis was deemed lawful, rational, and justified, according to the judge.
Prince Harry had expressed concerns about his safety and that of his family while in the UK due to perceived hostility on social media and constant media scrutiny. Despite his claims, a government lawyer argued that Harry had been treated fairly and had been provided security detail on some visits, such as in June 2021 when he was pursued by photographers after attending an event with ill children in London.
The court also mentioned how a committee took Princess Diana's tragic death into account when evaluating Prince Harry's security needs, giving weight to the potential public upset if any harm were to come to him. Prince Harry, known for challenging the government and tabloids through legal action, has brought multiple cases to the High Court, including three related to his security arrangements and three against tabloid publishers over alleged privacy violations.
Last year, Prince Harry secured a significant victory in a phone hacking case against the publisher of the Daily Mirror, receiving both judicial judgment and a settlement. He was to be reimbursed for legal fees and was expected to receive an interim payment of 400,000 pounds ($505,000). Recently, he withdrew a libel case against the Daily Mail after a judge ruled in favor of the publisher, stating that the article in question reflected an honest opinion and was not defamatory.
Despite previous attempts to privately pay for police protection during his visits to London, a judge denied the request, citing concerns about using police officers as private bodyguards for affluent individuals. Prince Harry's legal battles continue to highlight his ongoing efforts to safeguard his and his family's privacy and security amidst media and public scrutiny.
