Live Nation, the parent company of Ticketmaster, has announced that it was targeted in a cyber attack that involved unauthorized access to user data. The breach was revealed in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
According to Live Nation's disclosure, the company discovered "unauthorized activity within a third-party cloud database" on May 20. Immediately after the discovery, Live Nation launched an investigation into the incident. A week later, the company received a message from an alleged criminal threat actor who claimed to possess user data and offered it for sale on the dark web.
Live Nation stated in its SEC filing that it currently does not expect the breach to have a significant impact on its business operations or financial situation. The company also reassured customers that it continues to assess the risks associated with the incident and is working on remediation efforts.
The FBI has not disclosed any official details about the ongoing investigation, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has directed inquiries to Ticketmaster, the subsidiary affected by the breach.
Authorities mentioned in the report commented that the stolen data does not appear to include sensitive information such as banking or medical records. According to experts, customers can enhance their online security by regularly changing passwords, utilizing two-factor authentication, and keeping financial information private from unfamiliar online sources.
Interestingly, the cyber attack occurred just three days prior to the filing of a lawsuit by the Department of Justice and multiple state attorneys general aimed at breaking up Ticketmaster. The lawsuit alleges that the company has monopolized ticket prices for live entertainment, resulting in harm to consumers. Live Nation has refuted these claims, citing other factors such as scalpers and higher production costs in determining ticket prices.
As the investigation into the cyber attack continues, Live Nation and Ticketmaster are working diligently to address the breach and safeguard user data. Customers are advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to protect their personal information.
