Detroit Lions' running back Jahmyr Gibbs has declared himself fit to play in the upcoming season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, following a minor hamstring injury. Gibbs expressed confidence in his condition, referring to the issue as a "little tweak."
During a press conference on Wednesday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised Gibbs' performance since returning to practice. Campbell commended the running back's impressive abilities, stating, "He looks really good." The coach emphasized the importance of Gibbs maintaining his speed during practice to avoid potential setbacks during games.
Campbell explained, "When you can run like he runs - I mean, this guy can run - then if you don't touch that speed in practice at least once or twice a day, you set yourself up for something to happen on Sunday." Campbell stressed the need for Gibbs, known for his supreme speed, to continuously incorporate his top-level pace in drills to minimize the risk of experiencing any issues during game scenarios.
Gibbs, who was the No. 12 overall pick in last year's draft, had an impressive rookie season with the Lions. Despite playing in 15 games, he amassed an impressive 1,261 yards and 11 total touchdowns. In rushing alone, Gibbs tallied 945 yards and 10 touchdowns while maintaining an average of 5.2 yards per carry. Additionally, he contributed significantly in the passing game, catching 52 passes for 316 yards and scoring one touchdown.
As the Lions prepare for their season opener, the team will release their first injury report of the 2024 season later on Wednesday. Fans eagerly await further updates on Gibbs' condition and his availability for Sunday night's game against the Rams.
With Gibbs determined to take the field on Sunday, the Lions' offense gains a dynamic playmaker who has already showcased his exceptional skills in his rookie year. As the team looks to start the season on a positive note, Gibbs' return to action will undoubtedly bolster their chances of success.
