LG Display Unveils World's First Gaming OLED Panel with Switchable Refresh Rate and Resolution

In a major breakthrough for gamers, LG Display has announced the development of the world's first Gaming OLED panel with a switchable refresh rate and resolution. The company has already started mass production of the 31.5-inch panel this month, marking its entry into the high-end gaming display market.

This cutting-edge Gaming OLED panel allows users to conveniently choose between a high refresh rate of FHD∙480Hz and a high-resolution mode of UHD∙240Hz, depending on their content. Specifically designed for gaming enthusiasts, the high refresh rate mode delivers an exceptional experience for fast-paced games like first-person shooters and racing genres. On the other hand, the high-resolution mode offers a truly immersive experience for movies and 4K content.

Unlike conventional panels, which usually have a fixed resolution regardless of the refresh rate, LG Display's Gaming OLED panel breaks the barriers by providing versatility for multiple applications. The panel utilizes Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR), a new technology independently developed by LG Display, which allows users to prioritize between refresh rate and resolution by adjusting the image processing speed.

LG Display's Gaming OLED panel is equipped with several other state-of-the-art technologies to enhance the overall gaming experience. The META Technology 2.0, based on Micro Lens Array (MLA) innovation, maximizes light emission from organic materials, resulting in elevated image quality. Additionally, the panel incorporates Thin Actuator Sound technology, which generates sound directly from the screen, eliminating the need for a separate speaker and providing more vivid audio.

LG Display aims to supply its new 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panel to global gaming gear brands, starting with LG Electronics. The company has also outlined plans to expand its presence in the high-end gaming display market, with a full lineup of Gaming OLED panels ranging from 27 inches to 45 inches.

Compared to LCD screens, LG Display's Gaming OLED panels offer significant advantages. Being self-emissive, each pixel produces perfect blacks and lifelike image quality. With a refresh rate of 480Hz, they also boast the fastest response time of any panel currently available (0.03ms). Moreover, these panels emit half the amount of blue light and produce no flickering, making them less likely to cause eye fatigue during extended gaming sessions.
