Longtime MLB play-by-play announcer Joe Buck is set to make a special return to the baseball broadcast booth for the first time since the 2021 World Series. Buck will join St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Chip Caray in calling the Cardinals game against the Chicago Cubs on Friday, May 24, according to industry sources.
The highly anticipated game will be broadcasted on Bally Sports Midwest, the Cardinals' regional sports network affiliate. Buck, who spent an impressive 16 seasons in the St. Louis broadcasting booth, will team up with Caray to pay homage to their respective broadcasting legends, Harry Caray and Jack Buck.
Jack Buck, Joe's esteemed father, provided play-by-play commentary for the Cardinals for an incredible 47 seasons. Meanwhile, Harry Caray, Chip's grandfather, made his mark as a lead play-by-play announcer for both the Cubs and Cardinals during his illustrious 53-year career. The broadcasting industry recognized their unparalleled contributions by awarding Jack the prestigious Ford C. Frick award in 1987, and Harry in 1989.
During the broadcast, Chip and Joe will share cherished anecdotes from their upbringing in the broadcast booths, showcasing how their family members inspired their own careers. This special collaboration will allow fans to witness the legacies of these broadcasting icons intertwining on an evening filled with nostalgia and reverence.
While Joe Buck's broadcasting tenure predominantly featured as the lead baseball announcer for Fox Sports, where he called an impressive 24 World Series over 26 years, he decided to take a break from the sport in 2022. He ventured into the realm of Monday Night Football, signing a five-year deal with ESPN, but hasn't ruled out returning to baseball for special occasions. The opportunity to join Caray in the booth proved to be an irresistible proposition for Buck.
The Cardinals fans will be treated to an exciting lineup of broadcasts in the upcoming series. On Saturday, Fox Sports will take over the national broadcast, with former Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright filling the role of color commentator. ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball will conclude the series, ensuring a thrilling weekend of baseball for fans to enjoy.
Friday's game will undoubtedly be a memorable experience for both the announcers and the viewers, as the voices of Joe Buck and Chip Caray blend in harmony, all while paying tribute to the remarkable broadcasting legacies of Jack Buck and Harry Caray.
