Laurie Metcalf, Tom Hollander, and Olivia Williams have officially joined the cast for the third season of the Netflix anthology series "Monster," Variety has exclusively learned. This impressive trio will act alongside Charlie Hunnam, who has already been announced to star as Ed Gein, the notorious figure and inspiration behind Norman Bates from Hitchcock's renowned film "Psycho."
According to sources, Metcalf is set to portray Gein's mother, Augusta, with Hollander taking on the role of legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Williams will play Alma Reville, Hitchcock's wife, creating a captivating link between Gein’s real-life crimes and their influence on the iconic horror film and the novel it was based on.
This season marks a new collaboration for Metcalf and Williams with "Monster" co-creator Ryan Murphy, while Hollander is already familiar with Murphy's creative world. Hollander recently appeared in the second season of Murphy's other anthology series "Feud," where he earned an Emmy nomination for his depiction of Truman Capote. His extensive television work includes roles in "The White Lotus," "Rev," "Taboo," and "The Night Manager," alongside a celebrated film career featuring titles such as "Gosford Park," "Pride & Prejudice," "Bohemian Rhapsody," and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series.
Williams has had a recurring role as Camilla Parker Bowles in Netflix's acclaimed series "The Crown" during its fifth and sixth seasons. Fans will also see her in the upcoming Max series "Dune: Prophecy," which acts as a prequel to the "Dune" films. Her diverse TV appearances span "Manhattan," "Counterpart," "Dollhouse," and "The Nevers," adding to a filmography that includes "Rushmore," "The Sixth Sense," "Hanna," "An Education," and "Hyde Park on Hudson."
First premiering in 2022, "Monster" has seen significant acclaim, particularly for performances by Evan Peters as Dahmer and Niecey Nash as Glenda Cleveland. The series achieved high viewership, ranking as Netflix's third most-watched season of English language TV. Following its success, Netflix announced a renewal for both a second and third season in 2022. The recently released second season explores the chilling story of Lyle and Erik Menendez and the murder of their parents, hitting the streaming platform on September 19.
