### Taylor Sheridan’s 'Landman' Gets Debut Screening in Fort Worth

Executives from various energy companies gathered in Fort Worth on Sunday to catch a sneak peek of Taylor Sheridan's highly anticipated new series, 'Landman.' The event was organized by the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL), offering attendees a chance to watch the first two episodes. The screening was held in a conference room adorned with miniature pumpjacks, adding a thematic touch to the evening as the lights dimmed promptly at 7:45 p.m.

Fort Worth serves not only as the host city for the AAPL headquarters but also as a significant filming location for Sheridan’s latest project. Board member Jason Maloy expressed his enthusiasm, noting that the series provides a more profound insight into the landman profession, a less-known but vital role in the energy sector. "A lot of people don't really know what a landman is," Maloy remarked after the screening.

A landman, short for land manager, plays a pivotal role in negotiating between energy companies, landowners, and local communities. Their duties span legal research, public records examination, conflict resolution, and emergency response. AAPL president Nancy McCaskell highlighted the importance of communication skills in this line of work, describing landmen as the "public face" for new energy discoveries. "We negotiate deals on oil and gas leases, for roads and rights of way, and to lay pipelines," McCaskell explained.

McCaskell also emphasized the dramatic and often high-stakes nature of the job. "We have a lot of drama," she said, recounting the real-life challenges landmen face that could very well be lifted from a TV script. Although the show may exaggerate certain aspects for entertainment, it does capture the essence of the profession.

Fort Worth's historical ties to the oil and gas industry made it a fitting backdrop for 'Landman.' Throughout the series, viewers will spot familiar Fort Worth landmarks such as the downtown skyline, TCU's Lowdown Track and Field Complex, and the River Crest Country Club. Some scenes were even filmed inside the AAPL office building, further cementing the connection between the series and the city.

Maloy and his colleagues have found the show to be an accurate representation of their daily work, albeit with a bit more Hollywood flair. To provide additional context to viewers, AAPL will be releasing a companion podcast every Thursday. This will help explain the nuances of the profession and distinguish between the show's fiction and reality.

"Taylor Sheridan is a fantastic writer," Maloy said, praising both the cast and the accuracy of the portrayal. With Sheridan's roots in Fort Worth, having graduated from R.L. Paschal High School, the series not only highlights a unique profession but also pays homage to his hometown.
