Devin Burkes' triumphant punch through the night air resonated with the thunderous cheers of a record-breaking crowd at Kentucky Proud Park as the Kentucky Wildcats dominated the Oregon State Beavers with a resounding 10-0 victory in game one of the Lexington Super Regional. The win propelled Kentucky (44-14) within one step of securing their first-ever College World Series berth.
Trey Pooser, in yet another brilliant display, channeled the spirit of Pedro Martinez, stifling Oregon State's offense with seven shutout innings. Despite a brief hiccup in the fifth inning, where Pooser extricated himself from a jam of his own making, the pitcher allowed only a single hit, extending his postseason streak to just one run surrendered in 19 total innings.
Ryan Nicholson showcased his power at the plate once again, slugging a home run for the third consecutive game and smacking a double off the outfield wall. Emilien Pitre contributed to the offensive onslaught with a crucial two-run double, fueling a seven-run seventh inning that put the game out of reach for the Beavers.
Kentucky's dominance was further reflected in their impressive season record of 44 wins, tying the second-most victories in school history. The Wildcats proved their mettle under the lights, boasting an 18-3 record in night games, while also thriving at home with a 25-6 record.
The awe-inspiring crowd of 7,441 set a new all-time attendance record for Kentucky, surpassing the previous mark set earlier in the season. Coach Nick Mingione's leadership and strategic prowess have flourished in his eighth season, with a career record of 260-164, solidifying his position as the second-winningest coach in school history.
The Wildcats have been in incredible form during the 2024 NCAA Tournament, remaining undefeated thus far with a perfect 4-0 record. Their superb pitching staff has not allowed a single run over the course of the last 21 innings and only conceded a solitary run in the last 30 innings, establishing an intimidating presence on the mound.
Kentucky's remarkable performance against ranked opponents this season highlights their ability to rise to the occasion, notching an impressive 16 victories against ranked teams. Their aggressive baserunning tactics were also evident in the game against Oregon State, as they swiped four bases, bringing their season total to an impressive 117.
As Kentucky sets its sights on a historic College World Series appearance, they will rely on their explosive offense, stellar pitching, and exceptional coaching to overcome the formidable challenges that lie ahead. They will face Oregon State once again on Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, with hopes of clinching the coveted ticket to Omaha, Nebraska.
