In a recent development, renowned singer Kelly Clarkson has filed a lawsuit against her ex-husband and former manager, Brandon Blackstock. The lawsuit alleges that Blackstock may owe Clarkson more than the $2.6 million he was previously ordered to pay her in connection with several improper business deals orchestrated by him.
Court documents filed in Los Angeles and reviewed by EW reveal that Clarkson, 41, claims Blackstock and his family-run firm, Starstruck Management, engaged in illegal procurement of business deals on her behalf dating back to 2007. The previous ruling in November only covered deals made from 2017 onwards.
According to the legal filings, Starstruck Management allegedly acted as an unlicensed talent agency and violated the Talent Agencies Act by unlawfully securing employment for Clarkson without the necessary license. Clarkson is seeking a "full and complete accounting" of all the monies received by Starstruck in connection with any contracts or engagements related to her personal services.
Representatives for Clarkson and Blackstock did not immediately respond to requests for comments. However, Brandon Blackstock's attorney, Bryan Freedman, issued a statement to Rolling Stone, defending his client's actions. Freedman emphasized that Blackstock had not only assisted Clarkson as her manager but also used the earnings to support their children and their lifestyle during their marriage. He described the attempt to reclaim funds from an ex-husband as morally, ethically, and legally wrong.
It is worth noting that last fall, a California labor commissioner ruled in favor of Kelly Clarkson, ordering Blackstock to pay $2.6 million for negotiating contract deals without a licensed agent present, exceeding his duties as her manager.
Clarkson and Blackstock began dating in 2013 before tying the knot later that same year. However, after filing for divorce in 2020, their split was finalized in 2022. They have two children together.
The legal battle between Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock continues as the singer seeks further compensation regarding unlawful business deals. Only time will tell how this lawsuit will unfold and what implications it may have for both parties involved.
