The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to part ways with former Lions defensive tackle, Isaiah Buggs, following a series of legal issues, as reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero on Monday. Buggs, who finished the 2023 season on the Chiefs' practice squad, has been involved in several incidents since then.
In late May, Buggs turned himself in to the police after facing two misdemeanor warrants accusing him of animal cruelty. The warrants were filed against the NFL player, and he was later released on bond. Buggs' agent claimed that these accusations were part of a "subversive campaign" aimed at forcing Buggs to shut down his hookah lounges in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
However, Buggs' legal troubles intensified on June 17 when he was arrested and charged with second-degree domestic violence and second-degree burglary. Allegedly, Buggs broke into an apartment occupied by the mother of his child and forcibly dragged her down the stairs. As a result, his bond was revoked, and Buggs currently remains in jail as his legal issues continue to unfold.
The Chiefs declined to comment at the time of his arrest, but it appears that they have now decided to sever ties with Buggs altogether. Despite spending fewer than six months with the Super Bowl champions, Buggs never had the opportunity to take the field, as he was part of the team's practice squad since January.
Buggs' release comes just over a week after his arrest and signals the Chiefs' desire to distance themselves from the legal complications surrounding the defensive tackle. The team has not provided any official statement regarding the decision.
Moving forward, it remains to be seen how Buggs' legal battles will unfold and what impact they will have on his football career. Kansas City's decision to release him serves as a reminder of the consequences that off-field issues can have on a player's professional prospects.
