In the absence of Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback Justin Fields is seizing the opportunity to showcase his skills as he receives unexpected reps with the first-team offense during training camp.
With Wilson nursing a calf injury and labeled as day-to-day for the first four days of camp, Fields has been stepping up and experiencing the ups and downs that have characterized his three years with the Chicago Bears. While his ability to throw deep and elude pass rushers sets him apart, consistency remains his challenge.
During Saturday's Seven Shots drill, Fields completed only one of his three pass attempts. However, the completion was notable as Fields displayed his agility and decision-making by checking down, surveying the field, and delivering a pass in traffic to Austin for a touchdown.
Friday's practice saw Fields struggling initially, but he later found his rhythm and connected with multiple receivers, resulting in approving roars from Steelers fans. However, Fields did face difficulties in the deep red zone drill, with passes getting blocked and broken up due to off-target throws.
Fields' struggle to see the field was evident when he missed an open George Pickens and instead threw an overthrown deep pass to Austin; a weakness that he continues to work on. Yet, Fields rebounded and showcased his strengths later in practice, connecting with his receivers despite tight coverage from the defensive backs.
Fields received praise from his teammate, Wilson, who highlighted his competitiveness and ability to make great plays against a formidable defense. Although Fields did not speak to the media following Friday's practice, Wilson was more than happy to acknowledge his efforts.
The absence of Wilson during the first week of Steelers camp has provided an opportunity for Fields to refine his skills and showcase his potential as the team continues to plan for the long term in the quarterback position. Fields has demonstrated his talent, but he still lacks the consistency needed to be considered a franchise quarterback at this point.
For now, that role is being filled by Wilson, a Super Bowl champion and a respected leader amongst his teammates. Austin, one of Fields' receivers, expressed his awe at being able to play alongside Wilson and praised his willingness to help the team and support their personal growth.
As the Steelers navigate through training camp, the absence of Wilson has proven to be in favor of Fields, allowing him to gain valuable experience with the first-team offense. While Fields has shown promise, he still has room for growth before potentially taking the reins as the Steelers' franchise quarterback.
