### Jerry Jones Downplays Report on Ezekiel Elliott's Reduced Role
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has refuted a recent report describing running back Ezekiel Elliott as "dumbfounded" by his decreased involvement in the team's offensive plays this season. Jones labeled the term an exaggeration and suggested that the narrative misrepresents Elliott's understanding of his role.
Reports surfaced following Elliott's media session on Thursday, where he addressed his discussions with Cowboys coaches about his reduced snap count. Elliott noted a stark difference in his playtime, particularly in short-yardage situations. In Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Elliott took part in just 23 offensive snaps. During key moments, such as goal-line scenarios, it was starting running back Rico Dowdle who took the field instead of Elliott. Dowdle made the most of his opportunities, amassing 87 yards on 20 attempts — both personal bests.
In a Friday interview on 105.3 The Fan, Jones provided his own explanation for the distribution of snaps. He stated that the Cowboys are intentionally conserving the 29-year-old Elliott for the latter part of the season. According to Jones, this strategy aims to ensure Elliott's availability and effectiveness for critical games and potential playoff matches.
Jones emphasized the importance of Dowdle's role, particularly his ability to protect the quarterback, but also acknowledged Dowdle's injury history as a reason for not over-relying on him. "Rico is an outstanding running back," Jones said. "But his big problem has been what? He's had troubles with injury over his career. So it'd be madness just to rely on him for the duration of the season and into the playoffs."
The Cowboys owner also mentioned the presence of practice squad running back Dalvin Cook, yet he cautioned against reading too much into Cook's potential activation. "The point is, [the running backs] are there for everybody to see," Jones stated. "It's no secret. We're gonna use 'em."
By addressing the report and providing a strategic rationale, Jones aims to quell any speculation surrounding Elliott's role and to assure that the Cowboys have a comprehensive plan for their running backs.
