Issa López, known for her successful stewardship of True Detective: Night Country, has been tapped to oversee the fifth season of the hit crime franchise on HBO. López's leadership during the fourth season brought the series to new heights, making it the most-watched season with 12.7 million cross-platform viewers. As part of her new multiyear deal with HBO, López will also develop fresh content for HBO and Max.

The direction for season five of True Detective is yet to be determined, as it remains uncertain whether the upcoming season will follow the storyline of Night Country or introduce a completely new narrative. Despite some criticisms from creator Nic Pizzolato, López's season breathed new life into the True Detective universe, earning high praise and a large audience.

True Detective: Night Country featured a stellar cast, including Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes, with guest stars Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, and Joel D. Montgrand. López was deeply involved in the production of Night Country, serving as showrunner, writer, and director. Season four was also executive produced by Mari Jo Winkler, Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak, Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson Cary Joji Fukunaga, and Nic Pizzolatto. Additionally, Princess Daazhraii Johnson, Cathy Tagnak Rexford, and Sam Breckman were producers on the season.
