In a tragic incident in Syria's capital, top Iranian military commanders were among seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) officials killed in an airstrike on the country's consulate building. The attack, which occurred on Monday, has been blamed on Israel by Iranian officials and state-affiliated media.

According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, senior IRGC commander Mohammed Reza Zahedi was one of those killed in the attack. Haji Rahimi was named as the second commander killed, as per the statement released by the IRGC. The statement also listed the names of five other officials who lost their lives: Hossein Aman Elahi, Mehdi Jalalati, Mohsen Sedaghat, Ali Aghababaee, and Ali Salehi Roozbahani.

Photographs of the scene showed people gathered around the flattened building, while footage published by Iranian state media Press TV depicted extensive damage, fire, and smoke at the location. Iranian ambassador Hossein Akbari, speaking in Damascus, alleged that the consulate building was targeted with six missiles from Israeli F-35 warplanes. He further stated that Iranian embassy staff and military advisers were among the casualties.

Israel Defense Forces refrained from commenting on the incident when approached by CNN. However, a military spokesperson did acknowledge that the targeted building was not a consulate or embassy but rather a disguised military building of Quds forces.

The attack has sparked tensions between Iran and Israel, with Iran's foreign ministry spokesman warning of possible "reciprocal measures." Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian condemned the attack as a violation of international obligations and conventions, demanding a serious response from the international community. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad also expressed that the strike was a gross violation of international regulations.

The United States State Department spokesperson stated that they did not have confirmation regarding the responsible party or the target involved in the incident. However, the spokesperson expressed concern about anything that could escalate conflict in the region.

As the investigation continues, the exact motives behind the attack and the identities of the responsible party remain uncertain. This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
