iPhone 16 Expected to Showcase Advanced AI Features as Main Selling Point

According to a recent report by Mark Gurman, iOS 18's AI capabilities will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro or later models. This unique development has sparked speculation that the upcoming iPhone 16 may shift its marketing focus from hardware to software. The AI features in iOS 18 could become the key selling point for the iPhone 16 lineup.
As Apple gears up for the expected September launch of the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro, several details about the new models have surfaced. The Pro models are set to feature larger displays, with the Pro model moving from a 6.1" to 6.3" screen size, and the Pro Max model increasing from 6.7" to 6.9". Moreover, a new Capture button will be introduced on the right edge of all 16 models to enable advanced camera controls.
Traditionally, Apple continues its trend of introducing new chips to power their devices. Accordingly, the Pro models will likely be equipped with an A18 chip, while the standard 16 and 16 Plus will feature the A17 chip. Additionally, users can expect improved low-light performance from the Pro's main camera, and the highly sought-after 5x zoom tetraprism camera currently exclusive to the 15 Pro Max will be included in the 16 Pro.
While these updates make for a solid upgrade for the Pro models, there may not be as many notable changes for the standard 16 and 16 Plus. However, if Gurman's reports on the restrictions of many iOS 18 AI features hold true, the non-Pro models will be the only ones aside from the Pro line that support those features.
By incorporating the A17 chip, which currently powers the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 16 provides non-Pro users with a compelling reason to upgrade. Though the external appearance of the new phone may not appear groundbreaking, the inclusion of AI-related iOS 18 features that require an A17 or later will bridge the gap and entice users to invest in the latest model.
Ultimately, most iPhone customers value the overall experience that a new phone offers rather than the specific hardware specifications or minor iterative improvements. Therefore, when the marketing push for the iPhone 16 intensifies this fall, it is highly likely that Apple and phone carriers will focus on showcasing the AI wizardry that is only achievable with a new iPhone or last year's Pro model. This emphasis on software advancements is anticipated to be the primary driver of sales.
The larger displays of the iPhone 16 Pro models will make them easier to promote, and while AI features will undoubtedly add value, they may not need to be as central to the Pro models' narrative. However, for those considering the standard iPhone 16, which may appear largely similar to the previous year's model, unlocking the full capabilities of iOS 18 will be the standout feature that appeals to buyers.
