The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine is well underway, with Day 2 showcasing the talents of the defensive backs and tight ends. As the participants took the field inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, they were measured and put through a series of drills to showcase their athleticism and skill.
One standout performer of the day was Penn State's EDGE Chop Robinson. Coming into the combine as the 21st overall prospect, Robinson exceeded expectations with his impressive display. Weighing in at a solid 254 pounds and measuring just under 6-foot-3, Robinson blazed through the 40-yard dash with an official time of 4.48 seconds. He also recorded a remarkable 10-foot-8 broad jump and a 34.5-inch vertical leap, making a strong case for his draft stock to rise.
Another defensive standout was Alabama's EDGE Dallas Turner. Turner's performance left spectators searching for historical comparisons due to his incredible size, length, and burst. Standing just under 6-foot-3 and weighing 247 pounds, Turner showcased his athleticism with a 40.5-inch vertical jump, a 10-7 broad jump, and an impressive 4.46-second 40-yard dash. With these outstanding numbers, Turner's stock is expected to rise significantly.
However, not every defensive prospect lived up to expectations. UCLA's EDGE Laiatu Latu, who was ranked as the 12th overall prospect prior to the combine, somewhat disappointed during his workouts. While Latu's 40-yard dash of 4.64 seconds was decent, his vertical jump of 32 inches and broad jump of 9-foot-8 hinted at less explosive traits. Latu will need to continue to work on developing his athleticism to stay competitive in the draft.
Among the linebackers, NC State's Payton Wilson stole the show with his impressive performance. Despite having shorter arms, Wilson showcased his speed by running a remarkable 4.43 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Standing close to 6-4 and weighing 233 pounds, Wilson recorded the same impressive 34.5-inch vertical jump as Robinson and a solid 9-11 broad jump.
In the interior defensive linemen category, Florida State's Braden Fiske emerged as the top performer. Standing at an imposing nearly 6-foot-6 and weighing 292 pounds, Fiske's athleticism was on full display. He recorded the fastest 40-yard dash time in his position group, clocking in at 4.78 seconds. Fiske also had the highest vertical jump of 33.5 inches and the longest broad jump of 9-foot-9. His exceptional 4.37-second short shuttle further solidified his strong performance.
With these impressive displays, the buzz around these standout prospects is expected to increase leading up to the NFL Draft. As the combine continues, fans can follow the live blog for real-time updates on Friday's action and keep an eye out for the players in other position groups aiming to leave their mark ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
