Hyundai is set to introduce an upgraded version of its popular electric vehicle, the IONIQ 5, with the 2025 model leading production at the brand-new $7.6 billion EV plant in Georgia. Despite being launched just four years ago, the IONIQ 5 has already gained significant traction in the market, outperforming competitors and maintaining strong sales momentum.
Last year, Hyundai delivered nearly 34,000 IONIQ 5 vehicles in the United States, making it the sixth best-selling electric vehicle. This success continued into 2024, with the company selling nearly 15,000 IONIQ 5s in the first five months, marking a remarkable 43% year-on-year increase. In May alone, the IONIQ 5 set a new sales record with 4,449 models sold, representing an 82% increase compared to the previous year.
Hyundai has revealed that the upgraded 2025 IONIQ 5 will be the first vehicle to be manufactured at its new Metplant in Georgia. Matthew Hunt, the President, and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, expressed excitement about the move, stating that "the IONIQ 5 is the ideal vehicle for us to start production with." The Georgia plant will produce all IONIQ 5 trims, with the exception of the IONIQ 5 N, and will eventually become the sole production facility for the model in the United States.
Furthermore, the commencement of IONIQ 5 production in Georgia will make the vehicle eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit, adding another incentive for potential buyers. Previously, Hyundai had been passing on the tax credit to customers through leasing options, but starting from October, retail customers who pay cash or finance their purchases will also be eligible for the credit.
The IONIQ 5 refresh, initially unveiled in Korea, boasts several enhancements and new features. One notable update is a larger 84 kWh battery, providing an increase in range from 458 km (285 mi) to 485 km (301 mi) in the Korean market. Additionally, the IONIQ 5 now offers faster charging, allowing for a 10% to 80% charge in just 18 minutes.
For US customers interested in the current model, Hyundai is offering a new incentive in the form of a $7,500 cash rebate for the 2024 IONIQ 5. This provides an attractive option for those who do not wish to wait for the updated 2025 version, which is expected to hit production in October.
Hyundai's commitment to the EV market and the anticipation surrounding the refreshed IONIQ 5 demonstrates the brand's dedication to providing innovative, competitive, and sustainable electric vehicles to consumers. With the upcoming production launch in Georgia, Hyundai remains poised to continue its success in the electric vehicle segment.
