**Texans' WR Nico Collins Placed on Injured Reserve, Team Faces Offensive Challenges Ahead**
In a significant blow to their offense, the Houston Texans have placed star wide receiver Nico Collins on injured reserve, sidelining him for at least the next four games. Collins, who has been leading the NFL with an impressive 567 receiving yards this season, sustained a hamstring injury during the first quarter of the Texans' narrow 23-20 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Week 5.
The incident occurred when quarterback C.J. Stroud connected with Collins on a deep 67-yard touchdown pass, putting the Texans up 14-3. However, Collins limped off the field immediately after scoring and did not return to the game, ultimately heading to the locker room. Following the match, head coach DeMeco Ryans described Collins' condition as "week-to-week," stressing that replacing his production will require a collective team effort.
“Nico has been the best receiver in the NFL this year,” Ryans stated. “So, do you replace him? No, everybody just steps up and whatever role you're asked to do, just step up and play your role the proper way. Nobody has to be Nico. There is one Nico, he's done a great job of that. Now, whoever is next, when your number is called, make the plays that you are supposed to make.”
The Texans struggled offensively following Collins' exit, managing to score only nine points for the remainder of the game. Even with Collins on the roster, the team's offense has not been particularly high-powered, ranking 19th in scoring offense with an average of 20 points per game. Quarterback C.J. Stroud, currently third in passing yards with 1,385, demonstrated considerably different performance metrics with Collins on and off the field.
Stroud's passer rating was an impressive 133 when targeting Collins, with the duo leading the NFL in Expected Points Added (34.6). In general, Stroud has completed 70% of his throws with a 7:2 touchdown to interception ratio and a passer rating of 107 when Collins is on the field. In contrast, without Collins, Stroud has zero touchdowns, one interception, and a significantly lower passer rating of 72, completing 64% of his passes.
Further complicating the Texans' offensive woes, Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon has been absent for the past three weeks due to an ankle injury, and his availability for the upcoming Week 6 game against the New England Patriots remains uncertain.
In light of Collins' injury, wide receiver Stefon Diggs is set to step into the No. 1 receiver role. Diggs is currently seventh in the league with 31 receptions and recorded a game-high 82 yards in the Texans' Week 5 win. Additionally, wideout Tank Dell's involvement is expected to increase; despite a slow start to the season, Dell averaged 64 yards per game as a rookie last year compared to his current 34.
The Texans' next challenges include facing the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, and New York Jets. Among these teams, only the Jets boast a top-five pass defense, allowing an average of 136 yards per game. The Colts, Packers, and Patriots rank significantly lower, potentially offering some respite for the Texans' struggling offense.
