In a surprising move, the Houston Rockets have made a savvy trade with the Brooklyn Nets, further bolstering their draft assets. While the blockbuster trade between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets grabbed the headlines, the Rockets quietly exchanged some valuable picks with the Nets.
As part of the deal, Houston returned the 2026 first-round pick they had received from the Nets in the James Harden trade back in 2021. Additionally, they relinquished the pick swap rights for Brooklyn's first-round pick in 2025 from the same deal. In return, the Rockets acquired an unprotected 2027 first-round pick from the Phoenix Suns and a 2029 first-round pick from either the Suns or the Mavericks, depending on which is more favorable. Furthermore, Houston also obtained two pick swaps in 2025 and 2029.
This trade puts the Rockets in an advantageous position, as they still retain the third overall pick in the upcoming draft. With these additional assets in their arsenal, the Rockets are now primed to make a serious push for a superstar-caliber player. Rumors have been circulating about their interest in trading for players like Kevin Durant, who is reportedly on their radar this summer.
While the Suns have expressed their intention to compete with Durant on their roster, the Rockets could offer the picks that Phoenix initially used to acquire Durant from Brooklyn, potentially making an enticing offer. Although Durant's stint with the Suns has faced setbacks due to injuries, the fact remains that both he and Devin Booker have been unable to progress beyond the second round of the playoffs. Additionally, the Suns' lack of depth became evident this season, hampering their performance despite the presence of Bradley Beal in their offensive-minded Big Three.
Houston's possible offer for Durant, or even Booker, could be difficult for the Suns to refuse. By presenting multiple first-round picks and potentially including promising young star Alperen Sengun in the trade, the Rockets are determined to make a powerful statement this offseason. While trading Sengun might raise eyebrows, the Rockets' potential No. 3 pick, Donovan Clingan, could mitigate the loss.
Interestingly, the Rockets enjoyed a successful end to the season when Sengun was sidelined with an ankle injury. They even achieved a nine-game winning streak, finishing the year with a 12-6 record and making a considerable push for the Western Conference playoffs. This success without Sengun might embolden the Rockets to consider his availability in trade talks.
The 21-year-old Sengun's development has been impressive, and he could become a valuable cornerstone for a team undergoing a gradual rebuild. If there are doubts about the effectiveness of the Durant-Booker-Beal experiment in Phoenix, this trade could be an ideal exit strategy for a Suns team that heavily relies on top-tier talent in a highly competitive Western Conference.
Alternatively, the Rockets can leverage their wealth of picks to explore potential trades with other All-Star players like Jimmy Butler and Paul George. It is evident that Houston is determined to make a significant move this offseason, aiming to contend for a playoff spot next season. The only question remains which team will take the bait and strike a lucrative deal with the Rockets.
With the trade season officially underway, NBA enthusiasts eagerly await further developments and potential blockbuster deals that could reshape the league's landscape. The Rockets have positioned themselves as active participants in these negotiations, ready to make their mark and secure a superstar addition to their roster.
