In a shocking incident at a Halloween party in Arizona, a high school football player has been accused of brutally beating another teenager, boasting about his strength during the attack. Talan Renner, a 17-year-old student, now faces charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping for his alleged involvement in the tragic incident.
The assault took place on October 28th at a Halloween party held in Queen Creek, located about 40 minutes east of Phoenix. Renner, along with six other suspects, has been charged in connection to the attack on 16-year-old Preston Lord, who succumbed to his injuries two days later.
According to a police report obtained by KTVK, Renner allegedly bragged to a friend online, stating that he had mistakenly "killed" Lord during the fight and attributing it to his own strength. In a Snapchat message, Renner wrote, "I got in a fight, a big group fight and I accidentally killed a kid. I guess I'm just too strong."
As they fled the party, Renner reportedly acknowledged the severity of the attack to one of his companions, stating, "I might have hospitalized that kid. I hit him pretty hard." Witnesses who called the police on the night of the incident described a chaotic scene with multiple fights and potentially dangerous weapons involved.
The alleged motive behind the fatal beatdown was a dispute over a gold chain. Dominic Turner, also known as "D Money," is said to have stolen the chain from a friend of Lord's, which led to the violent confrontation. Renner reportedly repeatedly struck the victim before others joined in, further escalating the assault.
Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene, with as many as 15 suspects wearing ski masks attacking Lord. One witness claimed to have seen someone "dancing" on the injured teen while others recorded and mocked him. Lord tragically died from his extensive injuries on October 30th.
In addition to Renner, six other suspects have been charged in Lord's death, including Taylor Sherman, Jacob Meisner, and Dominic Turner. Treston Billey and Talyn Vigil are also facing charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping. All of the accused attackers have pleaded not guilty and are currently being held on a $1 million bond.
The case has drawn significant attention, with Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice expressing condolences to Lord's family and affirming their commitment to seeking justice. Witnesses have provided vital information, including Vigil, who later confessed on Snapchat to attacking Lord.
Despite the serious charges against him, Talan Renner continued to play football for his high school, American Leadership Academy-Gilbert North, even after being charged in early March. Surprisingly, Renner was named one of the players of the game on November 17th, just weeks after the attack.
As the investigation continues, the Queen Creek community and the victim's family hope for a resolution that will bring justice for Preston Lord.
