The New York State Department of Health has cited Java's Cafe on Gibbs Street in downtown Rochester for multiple health violations, two of which were deemed critical during an inspection on Friday. The report highlighted serious concerns, including food from unapproved sources or spoiled on the premises, as well as inadequate refrigerator storage for potentially hazardous foods.
In addition to the critical violations, the cafe was also found to have issues with tobacco use on site, inaccessible handwashing facilities, dirty ventilation hoods and exhaust fans, unsanitary surfaces, and litter within the premises. Inspectors also reported the presence of insects or rodents and a lack of proper measures to prevent their entry. Moreover, living quarters were not completely separated from food service operations at Java's.
This news follows a similar incident at SPoT Coffee on Rochester's East End, which was recently cited with 14 health violations, including one critical violation. SPoT Coffee has since reopened after being closed for six days.
