In a tragic turn of events, at least 40 people were killed and over 100 others injured when gunmen opened fire on concert-goers at a music venue in Moscow on Friday night, according to reports from Russian state media and the country's intelligence service.

The attack, described as a "bloody terrorist attack" by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, began when three assailants dressed in camouflage attire began firing indiscriminately and threw an incendiary device or grenade towards the crowd during a concert. This resulted in a fire, as reported by state-run news outlet RIA Novosti.

Eyewitnesses have also stated that the assailants targeted the main entrance of the venue, continuously firing automatic rifles while the concert performed by Russian rock band Picnic was ongoing, as shared by an unnamed rescue worker to Interfax news agency.

Disturbing images circulating on social media depict thick plumes of smoke billowing into the night sky, painting a grim picture of the chaos that ensued at the music venue.

Russian officials, including Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, have expressed their condolences to the grieving families of the victims. Although Sobyanin did not provide an exact number, he referred to the incident as a "horrible tragedy" and announced the cancellation of all public events in Moscow over the weekend as a precautionary measure.

These horrific events come just days after the United States Embassy in Moscow issued a warning on March 7, alerting citizens about potential extremist plans to target large gatherings in the city, including concerts. The embassy urged people to avoid such gatherings for the next 48 hours.

As investigations into the attack continue, Russian authorities are intensifying security measures to ensure the safety of the public and prevent any further acts of violence. The music venue itself is now a crime scene, with forensic teams working diligently to collect evidence and gather information that could lead to the identification and capture of the assailants.

The heart-wrenching attack serves as a somber reminder of the persistent global threat of terrorism and the need for ongoing efforts to maintain the safety and security of public spaces. The international community stands in solidarity with the people of Russia as they mourn the loss of innocent lives and work towards healing and justice in the aftermath of this tragic incident.
