The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, where they hold the 25th overall pick in the first round. After missing the playoffs in 2022, the Packers made a strong late-season surge in 2023 and are once again picking late in the first round on Thursday night.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst has a history of favoring young prospects with elite athleticism, as evidenced by his past eight first-round picks. While predicting their selection remains a challenging task, it provides a valuable blueprint for understanding the team's preferences.
By analyzing the team's draft preferences, needs, and player fits, we have compiled a prospect list for the Packers in the first round. Several top prospects have been eliminated from the list, including Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers, Rome Odunze, Joe Alt, J.J. McCarthy, Dallas Turner, and Brock Bowers, who are consensus top 10 picks.
Other prospects like Terrion Arnold, Quinyon Mitchell, Jared Verse, Olu Fashanu, and Taliese Fuaga may require a trade up, making them less likely options for the Packers. Additionally, Laiatu Latu has been eliminated due to a medical red flag related to his neck.
However, there are still 15 highly talented prospects who could be viable options for the Packers in the first round. The list includes players such as Cooper DeJean, a versatile defensive back from Iowa who checks all the boxes in terms of athleticism and playmaking ability. Graham Barton, an elite athlete along the offensive line, offers versatility in playing multiple positions – much like a Zach Tom clone.
Kool-Aid McKinstry, a cornerback from Alabama, has a clean draft profile and could potentially be a Day 1 starter alongside Jaire Alexander. Troy Fautanu, an impressive offensive lineman from Washington, could provide dominance at the guard position and be a capable tackle at the next level.
Other prospects on the Packers' radar include Tyler Guyton, an offensive tackle with tremendous physical tools but in need of development, and Byron Murphy, a powerful interior disruptor who could be an insurance policy for the Packers' defensive line.
Amarius Mims, Chop Robinson, Edgerrin Cooper, Jackson Powers-Johnson, Johnny Newton, Jordan Morgan, Kingsley Suamataia, JC Latham, Marshawn Kneeland, Junior Colson, Darius Robinson, Jaden Hicks, and Kris Jenkins round out the remaining list of prospects.
While the Packers have previously been hesitant to draft wide receivers in the first round, as they currently boast a talented group of young receivers, they cannot be entirely ruled out from adding another receiver in the 2024 draft. However, it is unlikely that they will select one in the first round.
As the draft approaches, the Packers will continue their meticulous evaluation process to make the best possible selection at the 25th overall pick. With a history of targeting young prospects with elite athleticism, Green Bay aims to find a player who can make an immediate impact and contribute to their championship aspirations for the upcoming season.
