In a move to ensure user privacy and security, Google has begun implementing official badges for government apps on the Play Store. This initiative, announced quietly in November 2023, is now being rolled out across app listings, with over 3,000 state and federal apps from 12 countries displaying the visual badge.
Government apps often require users to share sensitive information such as identifying or banking details. With the new badges, users can easily identify and verify that they are interacting with the official government app, reducing the risk of sharing private data with a nonofficial app.
The government badge, which resembles a building, can be seen directly above the "Install" button on the app listing. Tapping on the badge provides users with additional information, including a message from the Play Store confirming that the app is affiliated with a government entity. The badge is positioned between the app reviews average and the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) score.
Google has been working towards cleaning up the Play Store, and marking government apps with official badges is part of this initiative. The company started testing the program with a small percentage of users and has now expanded support to over 3,000 official state and federal apps in 12 countries.
Currently, the government badges are available for certain apps in Australia, Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, India, and Mexico. Notable official government apps like FEMA and IRS2Go from the United States, as well as MyGovIndia from India, already sport the official badge. State apps like MyTN also feature the badge.
It is worth noting that the Google Play Store's developer policies already prevent apps from falsely presenting themselves as official government apps. However, the new badges provide an extra layer of assurance for users, making it crystal clear that the app they are downloading and interacting with is indeed the official one from a state or federal government.
Google collaborated with dozens of governments and developer partners to facilitate the introduction of these app badges. The company has stated that the Play Store program may expand in the future, potentially including more countries and government entities.
This latest move by Google demonstrates its commitment to enhancing the security and user experience on the Play Store. By providing visual badges for official government apps, Google aims to instill confidence in users when sharing sensitive information and interacting with government services.
