In a recent update, the Android website introduced a new landing page for Google Messages, showcasing the first-party messaging experience. The announcement also highlighted that RCS (Rich Communication Services) on iPhone will be available in the fall of 2024. This move by Apple is set to deliver a better messaging experience for iOS users.
The landing page emphasized the benefits of RCS, including high-resolution photos/videos, typing indicators, and improved group chat capabilities. It explicitly mentioned that RCS support is "Coming soon on iOS." Apple's confirmation of adopting RCS in the fall of 2024 further underlines the forthcoming enhancement to messaging on iPhones.
Although Apple's RCS announcement was made in November 2023 with a timeline of "later next year," it was widely speculated that it would be rolled out in iOS 18. Google's recent mention aligns with these assumptions, suggesting that RCS will likely be incorporated in iOS 18.0 or a subsequent update in the last few months of 2024.
Additionally, Google hinted at animated emoji reactions arriving with RCS. Currently, Google Messages handles this feature, while iOS has a similar functionality. This suggests that reactions might become a part of the RCS specification in the future.
Furthermore, Google revealed that Screen Effects and Custom Bubbles are currently in beta testing, while no beta label was mentioned for Voice Moods. Although some users have received Voice Moods, it has not yet been widely rolled out to the beta program. The update will bring a redesigned voice recorder UI, making it more user-friendly by opening a half-pane instead of requiring a long-press.
Apart from RCS and Voice Moods, Google emphasized several other features in Google Messages, including Photomoji, spam-blocking, end-to-end encryption, Magic Compose, the Wear OS app integration, an enhanced tablet experience, nudges/reminders, and voice transcription.
As fall 2024 approaches, the arrival of RCS on iOS is eagerly awaited by users as it promises to deliver a superior messaging experience. With features like advanced media sharing, improved group chats, and the possibility of animated emoji reactions, the communication landscape is set to evolve for everyone using Google Messages and iPhones.
