In a recent announcement, Google Search and Maps revealed that the chat feature in Google Business Profile will no longer be available starting July 31, 2024. This feature, known as Business Messages, allowed customers to reach out to businesses via text chat for inquiries or support.

For businesses that had enabled this feature, a "Chat" button appeared in their Google Search and Maps listing. This allowed customers to engage in chat conversations with the business, whether with a human representative or a chatbot. Users could exchange text messages as well as send and receive images, with support for read receipts.

Google assured users that messages sent through their Google Account were stored and encrypted with Google Cloud, ensuring privacy and security. Email addresses were not shared with the businesses, only the user's name and profile picture (if set), thus keeping phone numbers private.

Starting from July 15, 2024, customers will no longer be able to initiate new chat conversations with businesses using Google Search and Maps. Those who are already engaged in existing chat conversations will be notified about the phased-out feature.

On July 31, 2024, the chat feature will be completely removed from Google Business Profile. This means that businesses will no longer receive new chat messages through this platform. However, customers will still be able to find and contact the businesses through Google Search and Maps.

Google advises businesses to add a phone number to their listings or utilize the Reserve with Google feature as an alternative means of communication.

While this may come as difficult news for some businesses, Google emphasizes that they occasionally have to make tough decisions as they continuously improve their tools. They remain committed to being a helpful partner for businesses.

It's important to note that "Business Messages" is distinct from "RCS Business Messaging." Google is likely consolidating its messaging features around the richer experience provided by RCS Business Messaging. For instance, users can already check-in and obtain their boarding passes when chatting with airlines using the Google Messages app.

As this change takes effect, businesses are encouraged to stay updated with future developments by following 9to5Google on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, and by checking their homepage for the latest news.
