In a roster move on Wednesday morning, the San Francisco Giants optioned Luis Matos to Triple-A, just weeks after he was named the National League's Player of the Week. This decision was made to make room for Austin Slater, who returned from the concussion injured list and immediately took his position as the center fielder against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Slater had been sidelined since May 10, after a collision with the center field wall at Oracle Park. The Giants initially faced difficulties in finding a roster spot for Slater upon his return, given the performances of Heliot Ramos and Matos. Matos had an exceptional weekend with multiple RBIs, earning him the prestigious Player of the Week honors. Meanwhile, Ramos continued his hot streak at the plate, making him the team's standout player at the moment.
However, Matos quickly fell into a deep slump following his impressive performance. Since his consecutive games with 11 RBIs, the 22-year-old struggled, batting a mere .153 and failing to hit any extra-base hits in 63 plate appearances. Over his last 14 games, Matos recorded a paltry .343 OPS and showed a lack of selectivity at the plate, drawing only three walks.
Giants coaches recognized Matos' aggressive approach as a key component of his playing style but believed he needed to find a balance. Manager Bob Melvin emphasized the need for Matos to be more discerning with pitches and focus on swinging at strikes. As opposing teams began to learn his tendencies, they adjusted their game plan, often exploiting his over-aggressiveness.
To help Matos regain his form and confidence, the Giants have decided to provide him with consistent playing time in Triple-A. With Jung Hoo Lee out for the season, the team is currently short on everyday center fielder options. In the interim, a platoon arrangement between Slater and Mike Yastrzemski, both experienced center fielders, will fill the void. Additionally, Tyler Fitzgerald and Brett Wisely are also capable of playing the position as needed.
The Giants remain hopeful that Matos will make the necessary adjustments and rediscover his earlier success. This move to Triple-A will provide him with the opportunity to refine his skills and regain his consistency at the plate. As the season progresses, the Giants anticipate further adjustments will be needed from all their players, especially at the highest level of the game.
The Giants will closely monitor Matos' progress in Triple-A, as they aim to strengthen their lineup and maintain their competitive edge in the National League West division race.
