Mary issued an apology on social media, admitting that she had mistakenly self-diagnosed after experiencing anxiety about colon issues mentioned by her doctor. The couple also posted messages on Instagram, where Mary revealed that the money raised had already been spent on hospital bills. Amidst the controversy, Mary asked for an end to the death threats she had been receiving and explained that her limited understanding of English might have contributed to the misinformation. The DeNuccio's fundraising page has now been fully taken down, and GoGetFunding is advising donors to dispute any charges and withdrawals with their banks.
