In response to concerns over potential salmonella contamination, Fresh Start Produce Sales, a Florida-based company, has initiated a voluntary recall of whole cucumbers. The recall affects cucumbers that were shipped to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors in 14 states across the United States from May 17 through May 21.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall on Saturday after Fresh Start Produce Sales alerted the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture about a positive salmonella test result on a product sample. The recall specifically involves dark green cucumbers, measuring approximately 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter and 5 to 9 inches in length. It is important to note that mini cucumbers and English cucumbers are not part of the recall.

At present, the FDA is conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if the sample in question is linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak investigation, which has already affected at least 141 individuals. However, the specific product or products associated with the reported illnesses have not yet been identified.

Salmonella infections can lead to a range of symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. In some cases, the illness can be severe and require hospitalization, and in rare instances, it can even be fatal, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Fresh Start Produce Sales advises consumers who may have purchased the recalled cucumbers to avoid consuming them and to either destroy and discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. The company urges individuals to check with their retailer or place of purchase to determine if the recalled cucumbers were sold there.

To ensure customer safety, Fresh Start Produce Sales has notified its direct customers about the recall, requesting them to remove the recalled product from sale points and commercial activities. The company has also urged its direct clients to inform their customers about the recall.

For more information regarding the recall or any queries related to the issue, individuals can contact Fresh Start Produce Sales directly at 1-888-364-2993, Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET.

Recalls are enacted when there is potential harm to consumers, such as contamination concerns or mislabeled products that fail to disclose allergens. Recent days have seen various other food items, including ground beef, ice cream, and pies, being recalled due to contamination fears.

As the investigation continues, it is essential for consumers to remain vigilant and take appropriate measures to protect themselves from potential health risks associated with the consumption of the recalled cucumbers.
