In a precautionary measure, Florida-based Fresh Start Produce has issued a recall of fresh cucumbers sold in 14 states, citing possible contamination with salmonella. The recall applies to cucumbers that were shipped between May 17 and May 21.
The affected cucumbers were distributed to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors in a total of 14 states. These include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
However, it is important to note that mini cucumbers and English cucumbers are exempt from the recall, ensuring that consumers can safely enjoy these varieties.
The recall was prompted after a sample of cucumbers tested positive for salmonella by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated further testing to establish a possible connection to an ongoing outbreak investigation.
Fresh Start Produce has taken swift action to notify their customers who received the recalled cucumbers directly from the company. They have also requested that their customers notify their own consumers of the recall.
According to Fresh Start Produce, the recalled cucumbers are "unlikely to be in the marketplace" at this time. However, customers have been advised to check with their retailers to determine if the recalled cucumbers were sold there. Any affected products should either be discarded or returned to the store of purchase for a refund.
It is important for consumers to be aware of the symptoms of a salmonella infection, which include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. These symptoms may appear within hours or days after consuming the bacteria. While most individuals recover with treatment, those experiencing severe symptoms, symptoms that do not improve after a few days, or signs of dehydration should seek immediate medical attention. Vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness.
As the FDA continues its investigation and testing, it is crucial for consumers in the affected states to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their health. Fresh Start Produce's prompt recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for rigorous quality control measures in the industry.
