Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis Secures Distribution Deal with Lionsgate
ICARO Media Group
In an exciting development for film enthusiasts, Lionsgate has officially signed a distribution deal for Francis Ford Coppola's highly anticipated sci-fi epic, "Megalopolis." The film, which caused quite a stir after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, will be released in theaters across the United States and Canada on September 27.
Notably, "Megalopolis" will be shown in Imax, potentially sharing screens with the 10th anniversary rerelease of Christopher Nolan's acclaimed film, "Interstellar." However, in a week's time, "Joker: Folie à Deux," which was shot using Imax cameras, will take over the distinguished premium large format screens. Despite this competition, Lionsgate is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Coppola and bring his audacious and unique vision to theatrical audiences.
Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed his admiration for Coppola, describing him as a legend whose contributions to cinema have inspired countless filmmakers. Fogelson expressed his privilege in collaborating with the maestro and bringing "Megalopolis" to audiences. Lionsgate aims to be a home for bold and daring artists, and they firmly believe that Coppola embodies these qualities.
While distribution deals for "Megalopolis" have already been secured in multiple international territories, including the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Australia, and Greece, negotiations are still ongoing for Latin America, Brazil, and the rest of Asia.
Coppola has invested greatly in "Megalopolis," personally financing the dystopian drama for $120 million. The film stars the talented Adam Driver as an architect who accidentally destroys a metropolis similar to New York City, and subsequently strives to rebuild it as a sustainable utopia. Giancarlo Esposito portrays the corrupt mayor who opposes the protagonist's vision, while Nathalie Emmanuel's character creates a rift between them. The cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne.
Interestingly, Lionsgate has previously distributed several of Coppola's films on home entertainment platforms, such as "Apocalypse Now Final Cut," "The Conversation," and "The Cotton Club Encore." In addition to the theatrical release, Lionsgate Studios will handle the distribution of "Megalopolis" across all home entertainment platforms.
Coppola expressed his satisfaction with the deal, emphasizing the importance of long-standing relationships with companies and teams that have proven to be both great collaborators and friends over time. He expressed confidence in Adam Fogelson and Lionsgate Studios, drawing parallels to the success of "Apocalypse Now," which continues to generate remarkable revenue and appreciation even after 45 years.
Barry Hirsch, Coppola's producer and longtime lawyer at Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman, oversaw the deal on behalf of American Zoetrope, while Lauren Bixby and Christopher Davis represented Lionsgate.
With "Megalopolis" set to captivate audiences with its visionary storytelling and talented ensemble cast, fans of Coppola's work eagerly await its theatrical release, marking a new chapter in the celebrated director's illustrious career.
