Nwangwu's unexpected release from the Vikings was one of the highlights of Tuesday's roster cuts.
During his rookie season in 2021, Nwangwu showcased his explosive abilities as a kick returner by scoring two touchdowns. The following year, he continued to impress with another touchdown return, earning him a spot on the second team All-Pro. However, in 2023, Nwangwu struggled to make an impact as most teams successfully kicked the ball out of the end zone for touchbacks.
Despite a strong preseason performance, including a remarkable 48-yard touchdown run, Nwangwu failed to secure a spot in the Vikings' plans for this season. His difficulties in pass protection may have played a significant role in the team's decision.
Nwangwu's arrival in New Orleans brings anticipation of how he will fare, particularly with the NFL's new kickoff format this year. He joins a talented Saints running back room led by Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams, offering him an opportunity to learn and contribute to their success.
In other running back news, it has been reported that Myles Gaskin, formerly a key member of the Miami Dolphins' backfield, will be signing with the Vikings' practice squad. Gaskin had an impressive preseason for Minnesota and may find himself elevated to the game day active roster early in the season, serving as the RB3 behind Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler.
Additionally, veteran defensive back Bobby McCain, another former Dolphin, is also set to join the Vikings' practice squad. The finalized 16-man group is yet to be unveiled, but the acquisition of McCain further bolsters the team's defensive depth.
As football enthusiasts eagerly await the start of the regular season, all eyes will be on Nwangwu as he embarks on a new chapter in his career with the Saints. The dynamic running back and return specialist will have the opportunity to make his mark in New Orleans and contribute to the team's success on the field.
