Alberts, a former University of Nebraska football player and AD for Nebraska for the past 15 years, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Aggie Athletics program.
Alberts, who also had a successful career as a first-round NFL draft pick and ESPN broadcaster, has been the AD at the University of Nebraska since 2021. Prior to that, he served as the AD at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he oversaw the transition of the athletic program from Division II to Division 1 and led a renovation of athletic facilities.
President Welsh praised Alberts for his strong business acumen, range of experience, and leadership abilities, stating that he is the ideal candidate to oversee A&M Athletics. The program consists of over 650 student-athletes competing in 20 varsity sports within the Southeastern Conference.
Welsh expressed confidence in Alberts' ability to excel in the dynamic landscape of college athletics, particularly in regards to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) issues. Alberts' expertise and understanding of the business of athletics will be crucial as the Aggies strive for success both on and off the field.
Alberts expressed his excitement for the opportunity to collaborate with student-athletes and the 12th Man Foundation. He emphasized the importance of leadership in the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics and his belief in President Welsh's vision for Texas A&M's achievements.
While leaving his alma mater, Alberts expressed his gratitude to the University of Nebraska and its fans for the incredible 15 years he spent there. He acknowledged the impact the school had on his life and thanked them for their support.
Interim Athletic Director R.C. Slocum welcomed Alberts and his family to Aggieland, expressing excitement for the direction Alberts will steer the A&M program. Slocum, who holds the record for most wins as the football coach in Texas A&M history, commended President Welsh and the committee led by Dave Dunlap for their thorough efforts in selecting Alberts.
As a former standout player for the University of Nebraska, Alberts was recognized as the nation's top college linebacker in the early 1990s. He was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft and played for the Indianapolis Colts before transitioning into a successful broadcasting career at CNN, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN.
During his tenure as the AD at the University of Nebraska, Alberts focused on enhancing the student-athlete experience while overseeing numerous achievements in athletics. The university saw success in wrestling, rifle, bowling, women's outdoor track and field, men's gymnastics, and men's indoor track and field. Alberts also played a pivotal role in spearheading "Volleyball Day in Nebraska," which drew a record-breaking attendance for a women's sporting event in the state.
Alberts' initiatives also had a significant impact on the academic success of student-athletes at the University of Nebraska, with a school-record 95 percent graduation rate across all sports for the past two years.
A press conference will be held in the coming week to formally introduce Trev Alberts as the new director of athletics for Texas A&M University.
