In a latest development, former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter is expected to be charged with a federal felony connected to the sports betting scandal that led to his ban by the NBA. Court documents indicate that federal prosecutors in Brooklyn filed a criminal information sheet on Tuesday, although the specific charges and court date have not been disclosed.

The case against Porter is said to be related to an ongoing prosecution of four individuals charged with scheming to profit from insider tips provided by a player about his plans to exit two games early. Porter's attorney, Jeff Jensen, revealed last month that Porter had been struggling with a gambling addiction but was taking steps towards recovery and cooperating with law enforcement.

An investigation conducted by the NBA in April found that Porter had been tipping off bettors about his health and then intentionally claiming to be ill to leave games early, resulting in financial gains for those who had bet on him underperforming. It was further revealed that Porter had even placed bets on NBA games in which he did not participate, and had once bet against his own team.

The four individuals implicated in the scandal, namely Ammar Awawdeh, Timothy McCormack, Mahmud Mollah, and Long Phi Pham, have already appeared in court but have not yet entered their pleas. They have been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The court complaint detailed how the accused used their knowledge of an NBA player's plans to facilitate lucrative bets on his performance in games that took place on January 26 and March 20.

Although the complaint identified the athlete only as "Player 1," various details mentioned in the complaint, including a quote from an NBA news release, align with the league's investigation into Porter. On both January 26 and March 20, Porter's playing time was limited before he left the court, citing injury or illness.
