Former President Donald Trump attended the wake of slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller on Thursday, expressing his sorrow and calling it a "sad, sad event" and a "horrible thing." Officer Diller was shot and killed during a traffic stop earlier this week.
According to police officials, Officer Diller approached an illegally parked vehicle with another officer and asked the two suspects, Lindy Jones and Guy Rivera, to move their car. The suspects refused to comply, and instead of showing their hands as requested, Rivera shot Officer Diller. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Officer Diller succumbed to his injuries.
Former President Trump spoke to reporters at the wake, urging the need to stop such incidents and restore law and order. He emphasized the importance of doing things differently to address the issue, stating that the current system is not working effectively.
Guy Rivera, 34, was charged with the murder of a police officer, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon. He is currently hospitalized at Jamaica Hospital for a gunshot wound to the back after Officer Diller's partner shot him while he was firing his weapon. Lindy Jones, 41, is facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon and possession of a defaced firearm. Prosecutors highlighted Jones' violent history and missing court dates during his court appearance, arguing for holding him without bail. The judge agreed and remanded him.
Both suspects have a lengthy criminal record. Jones had 14 prior arrests, including attempted murder and robbery, and was out on bail for a separate crime. Rivera had been arrested by the NYPD 21 times.
Former President Trump immediately criticized the suspects' criminal history, stating that they don't learn or respect the law enforcement authorities. He expressed his deep condolences to Officer Diller's family and pledged his support in upholding law and order.
The wake coincided with President Joe Biden's planned fundraiser in New York, where he was joined by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. The event is expected to raise more than $25 million, according to the Biden campaign. In contrast, Trump and the Republican Party's joint fundraiser in Palm Beach, Florida, next week is projected to raise at least $33 million.
While President Biden called to offer his condolences to Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD, Trump's appearance at the wake emphasized his focus on combating violent crime and criticized the alleged record crime in New York City. He also highlighted the need to address the state's declining prestige and keep its companies and people from leaving.
Former President Trump's involvement in the wake of Officer Diller's tragic death shows his commitment to honoring the sacrifices of law enforcement officers and his ongoing push for law and order in the country.
