Former Michigan State senior starting point guard A.J. Hoggard has announced his transfer commitment to Vanderbilt, where he will finish his college basketball career. Hoggard made the announcement live on the Field of 68's YouTube channel, choosing the Commodores over finalists USC, Washington, Georgia, and Florida.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 210 pounds, Hoggard had an impressive four-year career with the Spartans, averaging 8.5 points, 4.6 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game. He shot 41 percent from the floor during his time at Michigan State. In his junior year, Hoggard had a career-high average of 12.9 points, helping the Spartans reach the Sweet 16.
Hoggard's decision to transfer to Vanderbilt means leaving behind a Michigan State program that has made it to the NCAA Tournament for an impressive 26 consecutive seasons. In contrast, Vanderbilt has not participated in the tournament since 2017. Last season, under the guidance of fifth-year coach Jerry Stackhouse, the Commodores ended with a 9-23 record. However, Stackhouse was fired in March and subsequently replaced by Mark Byington.
Hoggard's transfer is part of a trend from last season's Michigan State roster, as he joins fellow teammate Mady Sissoko in pursuing opportunities elsewhere. Sissoko will be playing for Cal in his final year of eligibility.
On the other hand, Michigan State's head coach Tom Izzo has made some moves of his own during the transfer period. In April, Izzo added Omaha forward Frankie Fidler to the roster, marking the first time in over three years that the Spartans have taken on a transfer player. Just recently, the Spartans secured another transfer commitment from center Szymon Zapala of Longwood University.
Looking ahead, Michigan State is planning to rely on second-year player Jeremy Fears Jr. at the point guard position for the upcoming season. Fears Jr.'s freshman year was unfortunately cut short due to a leg injury sustained from a gunshot wound in December. He underwent surgery on his left leg but is expected to make a full recovery.
As Hoggard prepares to embark on his final year of college basketball, he joins a Vanderbilt program that is determined to regain its competitive edge under the guidance of new head coach Mark Byington. With Hoggard's experience and skill set, the Commodores hope to make significant strides in the upcoming season.
