In a surprising turn of events, former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is making waves as a potential top pick for the Washington Commanders in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, according to a report from NFL Network.
Despite previous speculation surrounding quarterbacks Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels, McCarthy has now become a "popular" choice among team executives. The Commanders, who hold the second-overall pick, are said to be seriously considering McCarthy as their potential franchise quarterback.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero revealed that during the annual league meetings in Orlando, Florida, the consensus among executives from various teams was the likelihood of McCarthy being the Commanders' pick. His impressive performances, along with the familiarity between McCarthy and Washington's first-year general manager Adam Peters, have played a significant role in solidifying his status as a potential selection.
While USC standout Caleb Williams is widely expected to be chosen first overall by the Bears, McCarthy's stock has been steadily rising after winning a national championship with the Wolverines and receiving high praise from Michigan's head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh himself hailed McCarthy as "the best quarterback in this draft."
The 21-year-old prospect has been attracting attention from multiple teams ahead of the draft. McCarthy recently met with the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, and the Washington Commanders in his Pro Day. The Patriots, who hold the third pick, and the Seahawks, who pick at No. 16, have shown interest in McCarthy's talents.
The Commanders, under the leadership of new general manager Peters and first-year head coach Dan Quinn, seem determined to find their quarterback of the future. After trading Sam Howell to the Seahawks earlier this month, Washington made a prudent move by signing veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota in free agency, providing an added layer of insurance.
However, Washington is not the only team intrigued by McCarthy's potential. The Denver Broncos, who possess the twelfth pick, have recently met with him. Additionally, the Minnesota Vikings, who orchestrated a blockbuster trade with the Houston Texans for the No. 23 pick, are also circling the top-10 waters. Following the departure of Kirk Cousins in free agency, the Vikings are rumored to be exploring options to secure their desired player, potentially including McCarthy.
The 2024 NFL Draft first round is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 25. As teams prepare to make their selections, all eyes will be on the Washington Commanders and the potential acquisition of J.J. McCarthy, who has emerged as a top contender for the second overall pick.
