Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías has been charged with five misdemeanors by the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office. The charges are related to an arrest that took place in September 2021. A spokesperson for Urías confirmed this information to CBS Sports on Tuesday. The charges include one count of spousal battery, two counts of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one count of false imprisonment, and one count of assault.
An arraignment for Urías has been scheduled for May 2. It is worth noting that in January, the Los Angeles District Attorney decided not to pursue felony charges against Urías.
The incident allegedly occurred outside of BMO Stadium in Los Angeles following a soccer match between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and LAFC. According to an ESPN report, a bystander captured footage of the altercation on a cellphone.
Upon learning of the incident, Major League Baseball (MLB) placed Urías on administrative leave. MLB retains the authority to discipline players found to have violated its Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy, regardless of whether they have been arrested or found guilty in a court of law.
Urías, 27, has a history of similar incidents. In 2019, he was suspended for 20 games after being accused of shoving his girlfriend in a parking lot. If MLB decides to suspend Urías again, given his status as a repeat offender, it is expected to be a lengthy banishment. This would make him the first player in MLB history to receive two punishments for violating the league's policy on domestic violence.
Urías, who finished in the top 10 in Cy Young Award voting twice, including the 2022 season in which he led the league in earned run average, has not played since being placed on administrative leave. His contract with the Dodgers expired at the end of last season, making him a free agent.
