In a recent development, former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, Julio Urías, has been charged by the Los Angeles City Attorney's office with five misdemeanors related to an alleged altercation that occurred in September. The charges include one count of spousal battery, two counts of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one count of false imprisonment, and one count of assault.
The incident reportedly took place outside of a soccer game at BMO Stadium, and TMZ was the first to report the charges against Urías. The left-hander's arraignment is scheduled for May 2.
Back in September of last year, Urías was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence. However, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office decided not to pursue felony charges and referred the case to the city attorney's office for consideration of misdemeanor filings. The county's report stated that during the argument, Urías allegedly pushed the victim against a fence and pulled her by the hair or shoulders. Nevertheless, the lack of significant injuries and the pitcher's criminal history led to the decision not to pursue felony charges.
As a consequence of these charges, Major League Baseball placed Urías on paid administrative leave on September 6. This resulted in the player not returning to the field for the Dodgers and he currently remains a free agent while the league conducts its investigation. It is anticipated that once the legal proceedings are concluded, the league's investigation will be expedited.
Under the joint domestic violence policy implemented by Major League Baseball and the players' union, a player can still face disciplinary action even without criminal charges. It is worth noting that Urías previously served a 20-game suspension in 2019 after being arrested but not charged for a misdemeanor domestic violence incident at the Beverly Center. This policy was put in place in 2015, and no player has been suspended twice under this policy.
The news of these charges against Julio Urías has shocked fans and the baseball community. The proceedings will undoubtedly have a significant impact on his future in the sport. As the legal process unfolds, many will be watching closely to see how the league handles this situation and what consequences may follow for the former Dodgers pitcher.
